From the first quarter of 2023, your youtube shorts can be monetized. And, of course, there are some requirements to get eligible for monetization. Read the full article to have a brief idea about all the eligibility criteria and other useful key points.
Youtube is coming up with many remarkable changes in the upcoming year. One of the most discussed and probably the most awaited ones was the youtube shorts monetization. Until now, the only way to monetize youtube shorts was the youtube shorts fund.
That is going to be changed from next year. The Youtube shorts fund will end in the first month of 2023. And after that, you will start to see ads in your youtube shorts similar to your regular youtube content.
But unlike the regular youtube content, there will be a different revenue-sharing model. That will be a 45/55 split which I will discuss later on.
Another point to note here is that on your individual youtube home page, you will get a separate shorts tab. People can visit only on your own shorts feed, and there also will be the general shorts feeds we are currently using.
Ad will be displayed in both of these cases.
What are the Shorts monetization requirements?
Up until now, with 1000 subscribers, you must complete 4000 watch hours on your long videos in 12 months to get monetized. But from the first quarter of 2023, you will get another option; that is, with 1000 subscribers, you will need 10M views on your shorts in 90 days.
Let’s simplify it again. You will get two monetization options. To monetize in the upcoming year, you need to fulfill either 1000 subscribers with 4000 hours of watch time on long videos in the last 12 months or 1000 subscribers with 10 million views on your short videos in the last 90 days. Go through the Official Page of Youtube to know everything in detail about.

However, watch time gained from youtube shorts and google ads campaigns will not be considered for monetization.
And, of course, shorts and videos need to be unique, should be done by you, and should be made as per the guidelines of the youtube partner program.
And if your channel is already monetized, then you don’t need to re-apply for shorts monetization. You just need to sign in or accept the new terms and conditions regarding shorts.
Ads will automatically start to appear in your shorts from 2023.
But from which date in 2023 will YouTube start Shorts monetization?
Youtube finally announced that from mid-January 2023 or somewhere around 15th January, you could apply for monetization if your channel reaches the threshold of 10M shorts views.
And if youtube approves your channel, you will see ads in your shorts from 1st February 2023. And from that day, the YouTube shorts fund will end.
Here another question is if the shorts monetization option enables from mid-January, youtube will count shorts views from which date? Well, they will count from 3 months before mid-January 2023, which means 1st October 2022.
That means from 1st October 2022 to mid-January 2023, if your channel gets 10 million shorts views with 1000 subscribers, you will get the chance to apply for monetization.
What would be the revenue-sharing model?
Well, there will be a 45/55 split. As per the official announcement from youtube, the ad revenue generated from shorts will be added together each month and used to reward shorts creators and help cover music licensing costs.
They said from the overall amount allocated for creators, they will be paid 45%, and the rest 55% will probably be for music licensing.
But here, it needs to be clarified how much amount will be allocated to the creators. I know it sounds complicated, but that’s what it is.
This revenue-sharing model is even unclear to many experts, but most are waiting for practical data to analyze it.
And you need to wait until March 2023 to have a clear idea.
Will Youtube shorts be profitable for creators?
At This point, it isn’t easy to draw a conclusion because how much you will be paid depends on how much the advertisers will likely spend on shorts.
If the advertisers get good conversion from the campaigns they run in shorts, then there is a possibility for the creators to earn a good figure from shorts.
I saw many YouTubers react to the revenue-sharing model of shorts but have a different analysis.
Let me tell you some useful information. In 2015 google launched web stories, but at that time, they didn’t get traction, and very soon, they discontinued it.
But later, they relaunched it in 2020 to compete with Instagram reels. And to make it popular among the creators and advertisers, they increase the reach of the web stories.
Higher reach helps get more leads and conversions, so it became very popular among advertisers and creators.
As a result, within a very short period, creators made a big amount even from the copied content in the last couple of years
Let me tell you that youtube launched shorts mainly to compete with Tik Tok. Like web stories, Youtube Shorts have a short lifespan.
Youtube shorts gain most of their traffic in the first 48 hours. But like web stories, shorts are likely to have a higher reach.
And higher reach attracts advertisers and creators. So, there is a possibility of seeing a win-win condition in the year 2023.
And it’s known that marketing always works in a win-win situation.
